Statement From The Director of Athletics Regarding The State of Men’s Basketball

NORFOLK, VA – Old Dominion University Athletics is built on a foundation of excellence, a storied history of championship success, and a passionate connection with the Hampton Roads community. However, let me be remarkably clear: the recent results of our Men’s Basketball program are not—and will never be—the standard at ODU.

Winning championships is the baseline expectation. Anything less is a failure to meet the commitment we have made to our students, our faculty, our donors, and our loyal fanbase. The status quo is officially unacceptable.

To our community, I hear you. The empty seats in Chartway Arena are a direct reflection of a product that has not earned your attendance. Restoring the energy in that building and rekindling the "Mid-Major Terror" identity of ODU is my highest priority. We have the facilities, we have the administrative support, and with the implementation of Revenue Sharing, we have the financial resources to compete at the highest level of the Sun Belt and beyond.

Accountability and Roster Management

Success is not just measured by conduct off the court; it is measured by wins on it. To ensure a proper Return on Investment (ROI) for our program and our donors, we are taking immediate, decisive action to modernize our basketball operations.

Effective immediately, ODU Athletics has created and filled the position of General Manager for Men’s Basketball. This role is designed to provide elite-level oversight of the transfer portal, NIL distribution, and overall roster construction.

In the current era of college athletics, roster budget management is as critical as X’s and O’s. We recognize that our recent efforts in roster assembly and resource allocation have failed to yield the necessary results. The General Manager will ensure that every dollar of our "Rev Share" and NIL funding is utilized with surgical precision to build a championship-caliber squad.

The Road Ahead

To every member of the ODU coaching staff, the locker room, and the athletic department: the "standard" is no longer a goal—it is a requirement. We are making the moves necessary to hold every individual accountable for their contribution to a winning culture.

The pieces are in place. The support system is unrivaled. The fanbase is ready. Now, we will ensure the performance matches the potential. We will not rest until ODU Men’s Basketball is once again synonymous with championships.

Go Monarchs.
