Herd Overpowers Monarchs: ODU Drops Pivotal Series at Marshall

The situation in Norfolk has reached a critical stage as Old Dominion baseball (15-18, 5-10 Sun Belt) dropped two of three games to Marshall at Jack Cook Field this past weekend. With only five Sun Belt series remaining, the Monarchs now sit in a precarious position for postseason eligibility, as only the top 10 teams qualify for the conference tournament—a threshold ODU is currently fighting to maintain.

Game 1: Shutout Bid Foiled Late (Marshall 8, ODU 1)

Friday night was a frustrating display of offensive stagnation for the Monarchs. Marshall starter Bryce Blevins dominated, carrying a shutout into the final frame while striking out seven.

  • Early Deficit: Marshall jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning when AJ Havrilla launched a two-run homer to right field.
  • Starting Woes: Darin Kuskie (2-6) took the loss, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
  • The Marshall Surge: The Herd broke the game open in the middle innings, using a two-RBI single from Havrilla in the sixth and a two-RBI base knock from Jackson Halter in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-0.
  • Solo Spark: ODU finally avoided the shutout in the top of the ninth when Maverick Stallings crushed a solo home run to right field, his only hit of the night.

Game 2: Small Ball and Stellar Relief (ODU 4, Marshall 1)

The Monarchs showed some resilience on Saturday, manufacturing runs with situational hitting and a lights-out bullpen performance to even the series.

  • The Breakthrough: After three scoreless frames, ODU struck in the fourth when Will Johnson delivered a clutch two-RBI single to plate Stallings and Macaddin Dye. Nick Felton then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to bring in Scotty Young, pushing the lead to 3-0.
  • Winning Relief: Ben Tanton earned his fourth win of the year (4-0) with steady relief work, while Kellen Davis retired the side in order in the ninth to secure his third save of the season.
  • Insurance: Felton added his second RBI of the day in the eighth via a fielder's choice to score Dye.

Game 3: Blown Lead Ends the Weekend (Marshall 7, ODU 5)

Sunday’s rubber match was a roller coaster that ended in another lost series for the Monarchs. Despite a middle-inning surge, the Monarchs couldn't overcome an early pitching collapse and several defensive miscues.

  • Disastrous Start: Starter Nick Sulpizio lasted only 1/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits, including an RBI double by Jackson Halter.
  • The Comeback: ODU clawed back with five unanswered runs. In the fourth, Efrain Morales singled and advanced to third on a right-field error that allowed two runs to score. TJ Aiken followed with a sacrifice fly to give ODU a 5-3 lead.
  • The Meltdown: The lead was short-lived. Marshall tied the game in the fifth via a Jackson Golden double and a fielder's choice. In the sixth, Cleary Simpson delivered the go-ahead RBI single for the Herd. Jackson Okonkwo took the loss (0-2) as the Monarch bullpen failed to hold the line.

Post-Series Summary: Tournament Qualification Math

The series loss drops ODU to a 5-10 in conference play. With 15 games left in the Sun Belt schedule, the Monarchs likely need at least 8 or 9 more wins to feel secure about a spot in the 10-team conference tournament field.

The Monarchs (15-18) return home for a midweek rematch against Richmond this Wednesday, April 15, at 6:00 PM EDT. They then host Georgia Southern in a three-game series starting Friday night.
