ODU UNFILTERED: Previewing Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. — If you look at the advanced metrics, Arkansas State (13-8, 5-4 SBC) appears to be a Sun Belt juggernaut tucked away in the Top 150 of the KenPom rankings. But look at the recent results, and a different story emerges. The Red Wolves have dropped three of their last four contests, revealing a "question mark" where there used to be a exclamation point. For Old Dominion (6-15, 3-6 SBC), Wednesday night isn’t about slaying a giant; it’s about exploiting a team that has proven to be imminently beatable if the Monarchs can find their offensive rhythm.

The Battle of the Glass

The narrative around Arkansas State typically begins and ends with their relentless pursuit of the ball. Their Offensive Rebounding Percentage (OR%) of 37.6% remains elite, ranking among the top 25 nationally. They thrive on second-chance opportunities to fuel their high-tempo, 83-point-per-game attack.

However, the Monarchs enter Jonesboro as a much-improved defensive rebounding unit. By maintaining "rebounding neutrality" over the last five games, ODU has shown they can compete on the defensive boards. If ODU can limit the Red Wolves to a single shot per possession, they take away the primary engine that keeps Arkansas State in games when their perimeter shooting goes cold—which it has frequently during this recent 1-3 stretch.

The Offensive Blueprint: Unlocking Robert Davis Jr.

To pull off the road upset, ODU must avoid static offensive stretches that stall their momentum. While KC Shaw has carried the scoring load recently, the path to a win in Jonesboro has to include Robert Davis Jr. Getting Davis Jr. involved early is not just a preference; it is a necessity.

1. Transition Hunting

ASU wants to run, but ODU can use that pace to their advantage. In transition, the defense is often disorganized, failing to identify perimeter threats. If ODU can secure the defensive board and look for the "pitch-ahead" pass, they can find Davis for rhythm threes before the Red Wolves can set their half-court defense.

2. The Gravity Factor

Even when Davis isn't shooting, his presence is a significant tool. By running him off screens, ODU forces the defense to "over-help," opening lanes for KC Shaw and LJ Thomas to attack the rim. The goal is to ensure Davis isn't just standing in the corner; he must be a constant, moving threat that dictates where the defense has to commit.

The Verdict

Arkansas State is a solid Top 150 team, but they are far from invincible. They are currently a team searching for answers after a rough week. If ODU can maintain its defensive floor, control the glass, and successfully manufacture open looks for Robert Davis Jr., they have a legitimate chance to leave Jonesboro with a statement win, but until they prove they can close out a game we have to give Arkansas State the nod.
