Midnight in Montgomery: Georgia State Run-Rules ODU to End 2026 Season

Old Dominion’s 2026 baseball season came to a deflating end Tuesday night at DABOS Park in Montgomery, AL. Entering the Sun Belt Conference Championship play-in round after a strong finish at home, the 8th-seeded Monarchs (29-26) saw their campaign end in a 17-1, seven-inning beating at the hands of the 9th-seeded Georgia State Panthers.

The loss came just days after ODU secured a hard-fought series victory against rival James Madison to close out the regular season. In Tuesday's elimination matchup, however, defensive miscues and a poor command on the mound allowed the Panthers to take control early and advance to the double-elimination bracket.

Game Recap: Early Inning Deficit and Defensive Struggles

Georgia State set the tone in the first two frames, capitalizing on walks and a barrage of hits into the gaps. ODU's starting pitching struggled to settle in, and the Panthers consistently took advantage of the free passes and defensive miscues, building an early lead that would prove insurmountable.

The margin grew rapidly in the middle innings. Georgia State put together consecutive multi-run innings, aided by defensive errors in the field and a lack of effective relief options from the ODU bullpen. Monarch pitchers struggled with everything, harkening back to the first half of the season when outs were always hard to come by.

Add it all up and what you have is an uninspiring effort in every phase that led to a 17-1 drubbing that ended the Monarchs’ season in 7 innings.

Final Season Reflections: A Roller Coaster Ride Ends in a Wreck

The ending in Montgomery leaves a bitter taste, perfectly capping what was an absolute roller coaster of a 2026 season.

This was a year that began in a ditch, plagued by early pitching inconsistencies and multiple non-conference defeats. Just when it felt like the season might slip away, the Monarchs found a rhythm in late April. They quickly became one of the most dangerous teams in the Sun Belt, putting together a string of walk-off wins at the Bud, sweeping VCU, and pulling off a fantastic series upset on the road against No. 8 Coastal Carolina.

But just as this team gave fans a reason to believe they were peaking for a postseason run, the bubble burst. A regular-season finale loss to a struggling JMU team was followed by a non-competitive showing against Georgia State when the season was on the line.

When the lights went out on the 2026 season the Monarchs ended right where they started. Poor defense, poor pitching and inconsistent bats, but we did see potential. We saw young guys like Ben Tanton emerge as future stars. Now the staff has to get to work on retaining those guys and surrounding them with more consistency.
