A Valentine’s Day Massacre and a Legend’s Long-Awaited Homecoming

NORFOLK, Va. — There was love in the air at Chartway Arena on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't the romantic kind. It was the deep, enduring love of a community for its history and its seniors. In what was easily one of the most complete performances of the season, the Old Dominion Monarchs (9–18, 5–9 SBC) dominated Georgia State 78–55 in a game that served as a 40-minute display of "The Standard".

It was a triple-crown day in Norfolk: Ronnie Valentine's jersey retirement, Alumni Day, and Senior Day.

The Return of the King: No. 42 Joins the Rafters

The halftime ceremony was the emotional high point of the season. Nearly 46 years after his last game, Ronnie Valentine stood center court as his No. 42 was raised to the rafters. Valentine, ODU’s all-time leading scorer (2,204 points), stood arm-in-arm with his mother, Nancy Valentine Hawkins, following his miraculous recovery and return to Norfolk after decades away.

The crowd of 4,759 provided a lengthy standing ovation as AD Wood Selig presented the legend with a replica jersey. The moment was punctuated by the presence of approximately 50 returning alumni, including former teammates and coaches, who formed a bridge between the program’s storied past and its hopeful future.

The Game: Precision and Paint Dominance

Before the tip, the Monarchs honored five seniors: KC Shaw, LJ Thomas, Jordan Battle, Caelum Swanton-Rodger, and Cooper Jones. The energy from the ceremony translated directly to the court. ODU broke a close 26–24 game open late in the first half with a 10–2 run and never looked back.

Senior Spotlight: The "Shaw and Swanton-Rodger" Show

  • KC Shaw: In arguably his best game of the season, Shaw poured in 28 points on 13-of-18 shooting, including four emphatic dunks that brought the alumni to their feet.

  • Caelum Swanton-Rodger: The interior anchor delivered a dominant double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks, essentially erasing Georgia State's paint attack.

  • The Cooper Moment: The loudest cheer of the afternoon came with 24 seconds left when walk-on senior Cooper Jones drained a three-pointer, providing the perfect exclamation point on Senior Day.

The Unfiltered Analysis: Structural Success

This wasn't just a win; it was an execution of the Excellence Roadmap.

  1. Connectedness: 21 assists on 30 field goals proves the ball-stopping "Oxygen Theft" of early January has been replaced by a selfless, veteran-led offense.

  2. Defensive Focus: Holding a Sun Belt opponent to 25% shooting is the defensive standard this program was built on.

What's Next?

The Monarchs now host Louisiana on Monday in a critical rescheduled home game. A win there could keep the "Top 10" seeding math alive as the push for Pensacola enters its final stage.
