After 642 days away, ODU baseball finally returned to campus this past weekend. While the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex, much like the team is still very much a work in progress the Monarchs secured a 2-1 series victory over Quinnipiac.
Playing through the "pardon our dust" phase of a $24 million renovation, ODU proved that even a partially finished home still provides comfort.
Game 1: A Grand (Re)Opening (ODU 15, Quinnipiac 5)
Friday’s opener was a masterclass in resilience. After falling behind 3-2 in the third, the Monarchs exploded for 10 unanswered runs. Darin Kuskie, the transfer from USC Upstate, lived up to the hype in his debut, striking out 9 over 5.0 innings without issuing a single walk. The offense was spearheaded by Zach Leite and Efrain Morales, who combined for 6 hits and 7 RBIs.
Game 2: A Carbon Copy (ODU 15, Quinnipiac 5)
The first game of Saturday’s twin bill was a mirror image of Friday. ODU’s lineup was relentless, hanging another 15-spot on the Bobcats. Tyler Zedalis ignited the crowd with a towering solo blast in the second, and the Monarchs’ discipline at the plate forced Quinnipiac into high-stress innings early. By the fifth, ODU had poured on 7 more runs, effectively sealing the series win.
Game 3: A Gritty Finale (Quinnipiac 6, ODU 5 - F/10)
The sweep wasn't meant to be, as the second half of the doubleheader turned into a classic pitching duel that stretched into extra innings. Despite a late rally from the Monarchs, Quinnipiac managed to scratch across a run in the top of the 10th to avoid the sweep. While the loss stung, the 2-1 series start marks the sixth time in seven seasons that ODU has won its opening weekend.
Top Performers & Series Leaders
Zach Leite | 1B | The heartbeat of the offense; tallied a massive 8 RBIs across the first two games.
Darin Kuskie | RHP | Provided a dominant Friday start: 5.0 IP, 9 K, 0 BB, 1-0 record.
Tyler Zedalis | DH/INF | Accounted for the series' first HR and a crucial RBI double in the Game 2 rout.
Efrain Morales | OF | A machine at the plate, recording multiple 3-hit games over the weekend.
The Construction Report
If you’re heading to the Bud this spring, things look a little different. Because the main grandstand and press box are still under major construction, ODU has pivoted to a "fan-first" temporary setup:
* The Power Alley Patio: With the traditional Rally Alley closed due to construction, ODU has set up a new fan zone in left field featuring food trucks and beverage stations.
* Temporary Seating: Fans are currently accommodated in temporary bleachers behind left field, offering a unique "crawford box" style view of the action.
* The Future: Once complete later this year, the facility will feature ODU-style brickwork, luxury suites, and a club area behind home plate. For now, we trade the luxury for a front-row seat to the rebuild.
Series Stats of Note
* Run Support: ODU averaged 11.6 runs per game over the weekend.
* Plate Discipline: The Monarchs drew 19 walks across the three games, constantly putting pressure on the Quinnipiac bullpen.
* Homecoming: The attendance for Friday’s opener was a spirited crowd that braved the cold to see the first on-campus game since May 2024.
