Monarchs Suffer Season's 5th Run Rule Loss at #10 UVA

The mid-March struggles for ODU baseball (13-15) reached a new low on Tuesday night as the Monarchs were dismantled by No. 10 Virginia, falling 16-2 in a seven-inning run-rule defeat at Disharoon Park. It was a night to forget for the Monarch pitching staff, which surrendered 14 hits and allowed the potent Cavalier offense to score in every single inning.

The loss marks ODU's fifth run-rule defeat of the 2026 season—a concerning trend as the team prepares to return to Sun Belt play this weekend.

Game Recap: A Total Breakdown in Charlottesville

The game started as a defensive nightmare and never recovered. Virginia jumped on ODU starter Ethan Hubbell immediately, plating four runs in the first inning highlighted by a Kyle Johnson three-run home run. Hubbell lasted only 1.1 innings, exiting after giving up five runs on three hits and two walks.

Rare Moments of Offense

Old Dominion showed a brief spark in the second inning, plating their only two runs of the night. Tyler Zedalis launched a solo home run to deep left field, his sixth of the season, to put ODU on the board. Later in the frame, Scotty Young drove in Efrain Morales with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-2, but that was as close as the Monarchs would get.

The Harris Hurricane

The rest of the evening belonged to UVA’s Sam Harris, who put on one of the most dominant individual performances against ODU in recent memory. Harris went a perfect 5-for-5 with 6 RBIs, including two home runs. The knockout blow came in a six-run sixth inning, where back-to-back home runs by AJ Gracia (a grand slam) and Harris pushed the lead to 14 runs, effectively ending the contest early.
