Robert Davis Jr. Drops 29 in Gutty Road Win over Coastal

CONWAY, S.C. — For weeks, the "Unfiltered" take has been a tough pill to swallow. But on Thursday night at the HTC Center, the Monarchs finally provided the medicine. Old Dominion (5-12, 2-3 Sun Belt) snapped their four-game skid with a definitive 70-66 victory over Coastal Carolina, a game that felt less like a lucky break and more like a blueprint for the rest of the season.

If you were looking for signs of life, look no further than the three major keys that turned the tide in Conway.

1. The Robert Davis Jr. Breakout

We’ve been waiting for it all year, and Robert Davis Jr. officially arrived on Thursday night. The all Sun Belt guard was an absolute flamethrower, exploding for a season-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. His efficiency from beyond the arc (5-of-10) was the engine ODU has been missing. More importantly, he hit his fifth triple during a decisive second-half surge that pushed the lead to a comfortable 16 points with eight minutes to play. This wasn't just a high-scoring night; it was the performance of a leader taking over when his team needed it.

2. Offensive Harmony: Sharing the Rock

The "stagnant" offense we criticized in December was nowhere to be found. ODU finished with 12 assists on 29 made field goals, a testament to a much-improved commitment to sharing the basketball. While Davis Jr. was the primary beneficiary, the ball didn't stick. KC Shaw (12 points, 7 rebounds) and LJ Thomas (8 points, 3 assists) kept the defense moving, allowing the Monarchs to shoot a solid 45.3% from the field, a stark improvement from their season average.

3. Defense & Focus: The Clampdown

The most encouraging part of the night? The effort on the defensive end. The Monarchs entered the arena with a focused intensity that rattled the Chanticleers from the opening tip. Coastal Carolina missed their first 11 field-goal attempts, a stat that perfectly encapsulates the renewed defensive focus.

The grit extended to the glass, where ODU physically dominated the interior, outrebounding the Chants 46-34. Jordan Battle embodied this hustle, failing to find his shot but making an impact with a team-high 5 steals and 3 assists. It was the kind of complete defensive effort, holding CCU to just 36.2% shooting, that wins conference road games.

The Verdict

The Monarchs led for over 39 minutes and never trailed. While the Chants made a late run to keep it interesting, ODU didn't blink. They showed they can play with discipline, share the ball, and rely on a high-level scorer to close the door.  While hope is still difficult to come by with this group, this game showed there is a path to better play.
