The first full round of the ODU Unfiltered Coaching Bracket Challenge is officially in the books. In this simulation, we seeded 51 candidates based purely on their Quality Score, but the tournament is decided by Targetability. This round proved that while a shiny resume gets you a high seed, it doesn't guarantee a spot in the Sweet 16 if the Targetability Rank—the measure of how realistic a hire is—doesn't back it up.
Here is the full recap of the Round of 32 matchups:
The Matchups
#1 Bob Richey vs. #51 Jeremy Shulman Richey entered as the top overall seed, but Shulman put up a fight. Ultimately, Richey’s elite win record and a Targetability Rank of 17 allowed him to hold off the underdog and advance.
Winner: Bob Richey
#21 John Krikorian vs. #22 Speedy Claxton A battle of two highly efficient systems. Krikorian’s status as a local legend and his superior Targetability Rank (5) proved too strong for the Hofstra legend.
Winner: John Krikorian
#8 Steve Forbes vs. #34 Tim Koenig Forbes is a "Targetability" heavyweight in this field. With the #2 overall rank, he comfortably dispatched Koenig, who simply couldn't overcome the gap in both quality and realism.
Winner: Steve Forbes
#9 Travis DeCuire vs. #32 Joe Jones In a battle of veteran head coaches, DeCuire’s history as a former ODU assistant gave him the slight edge in Targetability needed to move past Jones.
Winner: Travis DeCuire
#4 Matt Langel vs. #47 Peter Thomas UPSET! Langel is one of the highest-quality coaches in the country, but his long-term extension at Colgate makes him a difficult "lure." Thomas, a local assistant with a higher Targetability Rank, pulls the shocker.
Winner: Peter Thomas
#13 Darrin Horn vs. #26 Wes Miller Horn’s Targetability Rank of 3 makes him a massive favorite in this tournament. Despite Miller’s high-major status, the data suggests Horn is the far more realistic move for the Monarchs.
Winner: Darrin Horn
#5 John Becker vs. #45 Michael Huger UPSET! Becker has the wins, but Huger has the ODU ties. Huger’s availability and connection to the program’s history pushed him past the Vermont coach.
Winner: Michael Huger
#12 Justin Gainey vs. #28 Robert Jones UPSET! While Gainey is an elite Power 4 assistant, Robert Jones is already winning across the street. Jones’s #8 Targetability Rank allowed him to cruise past the higher-seeded Gainey.
Winner: Robert Jones
#2 Kevin Keatts vs. #49 Easton Bazzoli The #1 overall Targetability candidate made short work of the young "rising star." Keatts’s availability and Virginia roots make him a juggernaut in this bracket.
Winner: Kevin Keatts
#19 Mike Jones vs. #24 Griff Aldrich UPSET! In a clash of Virginia coaching styles, Aldrich’s Readiness score and superior Targetability Rank allowed him to edge out the UNCG veteran.
Winner: Griff Aldrich
#7 James Jones vs. #38 Adam Cohen UPSET! James Jones is a legend at Yale, but that's exactly why his Targetability is low—he's unlikely to leave. Cohen advances based on the realism of a high-major assistant looking for a shot.
Winner: Adam Cohen
#10 Dustin Kerns vs. #30 Terry Johnson Kerns, a proven winner in the Sun Belt, defended his seed easily. His familiarity with the conference and high-level Targetability sent him to the Sweet 16.
Winner: Dustin Kerns
#3 Luke Murray vs. #48 Steve Curran UPSET! The biggest shock of the tournament. Murray is a "Dream Hire," but his UConn success makes him an improbable target, a his stock has only risen since he showed interest in the ODU job 2 years ago. Curran, based locally at George Mason, takes the win based on pure realism.
Winner: Steve Curran
#15 Joel Justus vs. #25 Corey Gipson Justus holds his seed in a close one. His deep recruiting ties in Virginia and #4 Targetability Rank make him one of the most dangerous candidates left in the field.
Winner: Joel Justus
#6 Takayo Siddle vs. #42 Jamal Brunt Siddle moves forward. Despite his recent extension at UNCW, he remains a more targetable option for ODU than a Big Ten assistant with fewer head coaching miles.
Winner: Takayo Siddle
#11 Pat Skerry vs. #29 Jim Crutchfield UPSET! Skerry has the CAA experience, but Crutchfield is a data anomaly with a massive winning percentage. His high Targetability Rank carries him past the Towson veteran.
Winner: Jim Crutchfield
