ODU Looks for Revenge in Huntington

Matchup: Old Dominion (8-19, 4-11 Sun Belt) at Marshall (17-10, 9-5 Sun Belt) Date: February 24, 2026 | 7:00 PM ET Location: Cam Henderson Center, Huntington, WV

The Monarchs head to Huntington for a late-season rematch that they hope can provide a springboard as we march toward Pensacola. After a tough home loss to the Thundering Herd just two weeks ago, ODU has a chance to return the favor on the road and prove they’ve learned from the defensive lapses that defined the first meeting.

The Rematch: Learning from Round 1

When these two met in Norfolk on February 11th, Marshall walked away with an 81-79 victory. The scoreline doesn't even tell the full story: ODU led by 13 at the half and built that lead to 17 early in the second period before the wheels came off.  Sound familiar?

To flip the script in Huntington, ODU has to address two specific failures from that first matchup:

  • Managing the Momentum Swing: On 2/11, Marshall erased a 17-point deficit in roughly 12 minutes. The Herd found their rhythm as soon as ODU’s offense went stagnant. In Huntington, the crowd will be engaged; ODU cannot afford a 4-minute scoring drought when the Herd starts their inevitable run.

  • Interior Depth & Fouls: Caelum Swanton-Rodger was a force early in the first game (15 points), but foul trouble limited him to the bench for most of the final nine minutes. That’s exactly when Marshall made their move. ODU’s CSR must stay disciplined to be the rim protector on the floor for the closing stretch.

The "Unfiltered" Statistical Preview

  • The Pace Pressure: Marshall plays at the 42nd fastest pace in the country. In the first meeting, ODU actually handled the pace well in the first half but got tired and sloppy late. Success today looks like ODU forcing Marshall into a half-court set on at least 55% of possessions.

  • The Three-Point Dagger: Marshall hit 10 threes on 2/11, including several critical ones during their comeback. ODU’s perimeter defense—specifically the rotation speed of the guards—will determine if Wyatt Fricks (24 points in the first game) gets open looks from the top of the key again.

  • The Free Throw Factor: ODU got to the line 22 times in the first game but left points on the board. In a game decided by a single possession, shooting 60% from the stripe (as they did in some stretches of the first meeting) is a recipe for a loss.

Key Player Matchups

LJ Thomas vs. Jalen Speer Thomas led the Monarchs with 18 points on Feb 11th, but Speer (18 points, 10 assists) was the one who orchestrated the comeback. Thomas has to be more than just a scorer today; he has to disrupt Speer’s ability to find open shooters in transition.

KC Shaw vs. Wyatt Fricks Fricks was the "Why" in the box score last time, dropping 24 and 13. ODU didn't have an answer for his ability to score both inside and out. Shaw and the ODU wings need to make Fricks work for every inch of space, especially when Swanton-Rodger is out of the game.

The Glass: ODU Frontcourt vs. Nate Martin While Martin was quiet scoring-wise on 2/11, his presence on the boards helped Marshall close the gap. ODU was out-rebounded 31-28. On the road, being -3 on the glass usually translates to a -10 on the scoreboard.

Data-Driven Analytics: The Winning Formula

To secure a win in West Virginia, ODU must hit these targets:

  • Second Half Field Goal % Allowed: Keep Marshall under 45% (The Herd shot over 60% in the second half on 2/11).

  • Swanton-Rodger Minutes: 25+ minutes (He needs to stay out of foul trouble).

  • Turnover Margin: +2 or better to quiet the crowd.

The Bottom Line

This is a pride game. Blowing a 17-point lead at home stays with a team. If ODU plays with the same intensity they showed in the first 20 minutes of the last meeting but pairs it with 40 minutes of defensive discipline, they can steal one in "The Cam." If they let Marshall turn this into a transition-heavy track meet again, the result will likely be the same.
